The shipping industry has taken a giant leap towards a sustainable future! Following negotiations at the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the United Nations’ maritime division, we are thrilled to see the adoption of a groundbreaking greenhouse gas strategy. Aiming for net-zero emissions from the international maritime industry by mid-century, this “Maritime Paris Agreement” sets the stage for a crucial industry shift. While this is a significant step forward, it’s important to remember that the maritime industry has a reputation for being sluggish in implementing change, with plenty of rhetoric but sometimes less tangible action. We must ensure that this time it doesn’t just remain a noble intention but sparks real, impactful changes in the pursuit of a sustainable future.
The Landmark Decision
The initial Greenhouse Gas (GHG) strategy particularly targets a decrease in international shipping’s carbon intensity. The objective is to cut CO2 emissions per unit of transport work by a minimum of 40% by 2030, and strive towards a 70% reduction by 2050, using 2008 levels as a benchmark. Furthermore, the strategy aims to lower total annual GHG emissions from international shipping by at least 50% by 2050, compared to 2008.
